Truck crushes policeman, driver arrested

NEW DELHI: A 50-year-old policeman was crushed by a speeding truck in outer Delhi's Alipur area on Thursday night when he was returning from duty. The truck driver has been arrested.

The incident was reported around 11pm near the Palladhar-GT Karnal road crossing which has been dubbed as an accident prone zone by the traffic police. Police said additional sub inspector Hazari Lal was going to his house in Alipur and had slowed down at a police picket when the truck rammed his bike.

Lal was posted at the Bhalaswa Dairy police station for the last five years, police said. He had received 192 rewards from Delhi Police and had caught 60 proclaimed offenders. Police said Lal was thrown off his bike by the impact and then dragged for at least 50 metres by the truck.

Hearing the crash, cops from the police picket rushed to the spot and nabbed the truck driver, identified as Rajat Kumar, a resident of Himachal Pradesh.

Lal was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival with injuries to his head and limbs. His family members were informed and the body was handed over to them on Friday morning. A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against the truck driver.
